Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark – Sealand (1981)

Moving on to their third album Architecture & Morality, OMD kept along a increasingly eccentric pathway. They had nailed down their lyrical stylings, and figured out how to make mildly subversive pop songs (particularly Maid of Orleans), now all they needed to go was to keep that trend going. With Sealand, the band pays tribute to another location. Sealand is a tiny ex-fort in the North Sea, off the coast of Suffolk, and claims to be its own principality due to various laws regarding international waters. OMD could obviously see the potential for loneliness, but also beauty, and the song perfectly combines the two, topped off with a short verse in the middle, where Andy (like with Stanlow) attempts to humanise the fort by giving it a female gender.
