It’s like why does so much lesbian representation fall flat and is unrecognizable for us? Bc so much of lesbianism feels tied into that failure to perform womanhood, not just in no sexual/romantic attraction to men, but the inability to perform the things that woman are told to do that make us attractive to men. Women in media who are lesbians are shown to have no difference from straight women except that they date women. Framed (by heterosexuals) as “progressive”, it feels like a complete misunderstanding of the complexities of lesbianism. I do not want to be misconstrued as saying lesbianism is a “feeling” bc it is a relatively new term in human history, nobody is a “real lesbian” because that doesn’t exist. But I think a lot of people would be happier if they stopped stressing themselves out on not “feeling” like “real lesbian” and instead examined how their differences with straight women shape their understanding of their sexuality and gender.
