so this was “rob’s love letter to the lgbt community”
he could have easily just written a story about mac finding himself at a pride parade, but he didn’t. instead, he wrote the story of a man gong through complete emotional turmoil because of his sexuality. everyone else assumes that he’s okay now, because he’s out of the closet, but really coming out doesn’t fix everything.
mac carries on dancing after luther walks out because this coming out isn’t about validation and acceptance, it’s about confronting all the fear and pain he feels and putting it out into the open. and it’s almost painful to watch as he cries at the end of the dance, this is something almost all lgbt people have experienced, the pain of confronting everything about yourself, even when it hurts and scares you to do so. but we’re told by the dancer and by rob:
“it’s okay”
because he somehow understands how much it can hurt. how the pain doesn’t end when you come out, or when you accept yourself. and sometimes you feel so much that it just comes bursting out. this was rob’s love letter to us and maybe straight viewers won’t “get” it – but i hope they’ll understand the love and emotion behind it.

There’s a fish that spends its life swimming to and fro, fighting water that seeks to cast it upon dry land because the water rejects it. The water doesn’t want it. These long-suffering fish, so attached to the element that repels them, devote all their energies to remaining in place.
