GLOVED KNIT FROM COMME DES GARCONS EST. 1980
This is the earliest Comme work I have ever encountered an image of. I cannot place it precisely, but it was created well before Rei ever showed in Paris. So some years before any dimension of what you understand to be the house of Comme des Garcons came to exist in any real, substantive sense, there was this garment.
Can you imagine this being sewn together, nearly three and a half decades ago? A Rei Kawakubo in her late 30s would’ve watched this pattern being drafted, then sized, then cut into black wool. It’s a careful cut, but certainly not an innovative one. It’s a crewneck sweater to cover you from the nape of your neck to the tip of your fingers. It is not a gendered garment. It’s not a garment of any particular showmanship. In fact, it’s almost epicedic.
Imagine being the first person to put this garment on. Smooth out the creases. Fix the snaps on the cuffs. Look at your hand in its black wool.
How does it feel?
