I made this 32-page Mitski fanzine for SPX. I had been listening to Be the Cowboy nonstop (let’s be real, I still am) and decided that I wanted to gently clear aside the pressures of professional and personal work and make an old-school indulgent fanzine. It was so fun!
Mitski’s music means so much to me. The way I explained it recently, even though she sings about feeling weak, she is obviously strong. Even though she sings about feeling sorry for herself, she doesn’t make me feel sorry for myself for identifying with her. There’s a lot of vulnerability and shame in her work, but it’s transmuted into power and pride by her relentlessly bold musicianship.
You can get a digital version of the zine here. All profits from sales of the zine on gumroad go to the #DefendThe11 fundraiser in support of 11 members of the comics community.
I’ll have physical copies for sale at Comic Arts LA in December!
